Joanna of Castile was the third child of Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinad II of Aragon. She was intelligent, multi-lingual, artistic and athletic as a child and young woman. As the 2nd daughter and 3rd child overall she was never expected to become an heiress to the throne but due to deaths she indeed inherited the role of Queen.

She had a devoted romantic attachment to her husband (an arranged marriage when she was16)  who did not extend the courtesy and  cheated on her constantly.  Nevertheless she was emotionally devastated after his death.

Despite years of power struggles with her father and brother, Joanna continued to hold reign through Spain, Mexico, Caribbean islands, and Peru for many years. It is rumored that Joanna had a fragile disposition at times and could fly into jealous rages at times. It is also a known fact that she was a ruler in a time when attempts were common to thwart any power a woman held at every opportunity. Ultimately Joanna was deemed "mad", and indeed she did display many unusual behaviours, especially regarding the death of her husband. Whether or not she was truly "mad" or just a victim of an oppressive society and power hungry individuals around her is still in dispute.
