This piece by Frederic Leighton, called The Fisherman and the Syren depicts a scene conjured from a ballad by Goethe and premiered at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1858. The scene depicts the fatal last moments of a fisherman seduced and brought to the ocean depths by a mermaid siren. I have added aquatic floral patterns and music notation behind the image.
