I have appreciated the art and artists of the Pre-Raphaelite style for as long as I can remember. I especially love the work of John William Waterhouse. He had a long and illustrious career, exhibiting at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition every year from 1874 to 1916, with the exception of only two years. I love his embrace of classicism, his use of bold colors from nature, and his attention to detail—not to mention his complex and daring subject matter.
This is another striking image by Waterhouse, completed in either 1900 or 1901. Unlike many of his other works, this piece is not based on any specific historical or literary source. It is a delicate, yet powerful and somewhat confounding piece. Waterhouse had originally intended to submit it to the Royal Academy in 1888 but did not complete it in time; instead, he submitted one of his many Ophelia paintings.
