A beautiful piece of art with an interesting history. It was originally painted between 1866-68 using his mistress, Fanny Cornforth as the model. The piece was later altered to show the face of another model, Alexa Wilding. It is one of two paintings in a series, the other being Sibylla Palmifera. Sibylla Palmifera represents the beauty of the soul while Lady Lilith represents the beauty of the body. The piece is meant to represent a modern Lilith rather than the mythological figure. It is a highly symbolic piece, filled with many allusions.
