This painting is a direct reference to the Arthurian Legend of Merlin who had fallen in love with Nimue. Nimue is shown putting Merlin into a deep sleep in this painting. The Arthurian legends proved to be one of Edward Burne-Jones favorite subject matters during his fine career. This piece in particular may have reflected an area of Burne-Jones own life and one of his admirers, Mary Zambaco. The painting is mesmerizing with its 2 figures so hidden, yet prominent among the hawthorn trees.
