Lady Godiva was a noblewoman, 1010-1067. She was known as a generous benefactor to a number of monasteries, This piece is based off of English artist John Collier's painting of Lady Godiva, who according to legend from at least the 13th century rode naked, wrapped only in her long hair through the streets of Coventry to ask forgiveness and pardon for the oppressive taxes her husband had forced on his tenants. Most modern historians feel the myth is probably not plausible as it is generally told. The story of "Peeping Tom" has also been related to the story of Lady Godiva and her ride, as apparently he was the only person to watch the Lady on her ride even though people were told to stay out of sight or they would be put to death. However, once again t there is little historical proof or basis to believe this story as it is first mentioned in publication in1826.
