Marie Curie is a giant of science. Born in Poland on November 7, 1867, She was a woman of many, many firsts. She is the only person to ever win 2 Nobel Prizes in multiple sciences. She won the Nobel in Physics in 1903 and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911. She developed the theory of radioactivity and coined the term. She discovered the existence of 2 elements. She was the first woman to become a professor at the University of Paris. Her work in physics was so monumental it forced reconsideration into the foundations of physics itself.
Beyond her genius she was also known as a kind, honest woman who led a moderate and humble life. Her life and fortune was given to the sciences. Albert Einstein reportedly commented that she was the only person he knew of who could not be corrupted by fame. She passed away on July 4, 1934 from aplastic anemia, most likely contracted from her long term-exposure to radiation.
On a side note, many of her books and papers to this day are considered too radioactive to handle and are kept in lead-lined boxes and those wishing to review them must wear protective clothing.
