Born on August 30, 1797, Mary Shelley was the daughter of two radical luminaries: the pioneering feminist Mary Wollstonecraft and the political philosopher William Godwin. Though she grew up immersed in a world of intellectual rigor and literature, she suffered the profound loss of her mother in infancy—a void that would haunt her life and work.
As a teenager, Mary began a scandalous liaison with the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, who was still married at the time. It was during a legendary summer holiday with Lord Byron that she conceived the idea for her masterpiece, Frankenstein. The novel's enduring success provided the couple with much-needed financial stability. However, their union remained a volatile mix of romance and tragedy, ending abruptly when Percy drowned in 1822. Following her husband's death, Mary dedicated herself to her craft and her son, authoring several more novels before passing away in London in 1851.
