Nell Gwyn was an actress and mistress of King Charles II of England. After Charles II gained power over the English, Irish and Scottish Monarchies there is a period known as the Restoration. These years are known to have lasted about 25 years from 166-1685, other scholars would covers the years as late as 1710.

During this time public stage performances became relatively popular after having been banned for 18 years during the Puritan regime. This is one of the earliest known era's of women being professional actresses. Nell Gwyn became one of the most famous of these actresses. She also became Mistress to King Charles II of England from whom she had two children.

As an actress she was known for her comedic skills. She played several successful roles as men, known as "breeches roles" as well. Off the stage she was known to be extremely witty, almost bitingly so at times and very intelligent. She has been portrayed dozens of times in stage, film and works of literature. She died when she was 37 years old after having suffered 2 strokes.
