Anne "Ninon" de l'Enclos (Nov. 10, 1620- Oct. 1705) was a french author, freethinker, patron of the arts, and courtesan. When you read the biographies of this remarkable woman it almost seems impossible she was able to accomplish so much for the time and age she was from. She was fiercely independent and never married. She had one son from one of her many relationships. She was a great advocate of the arts, and held many parties and gatherings at l'hotel Sagonee, a popular salon of the time.

She maintained a friendship with Moliere, Jean Racine and in her will left money for the son of her accountants son, Francois Marie Arouet, AKA Voltaire. Pretty good company. She held strong beliefs considered to be blasphemous for the time maintaining it was possible to live a good life without religion. She maintained these convictions, including the belief she had no soul through her whole life, even until the "hour of her death."
