Ana de Mendoza was born on June 29, 1540 in Cifuentes, Guadalajara, Spain. She was the daughter of the noble and powerful Mendoza family. By all accounts she was intelligent, gregarious, witty and attractive. Most historians speculate she lost her eye in a fencing accident although there are other theories as well. She married Rui Gomez early (13!) and into wealth. She had 10 children. At one point she was mistress to King Philip II. (It is rumored and feasible some of her children were also children of the Kings).
After her husband died, she lived in a convent for a short while. Ana rose to societal prominence again. Unfortunately for her some of her associates colluded to manipulate the king out of Austria and Ana was considered an accomplice. She spent the last year of her life in prison where she died in in Feb. 1592.
