Irises is one of the nearly 130 paintings created by Vincent Van Gogh in the final year of his life. The flowers were painted from the asylum garden in Saint-Remy, France. Van Gogh considered this painting a study. His brother saw it's brilliance and submitted it to the Salon des Independents in September of 1889. Each flower has it's own character and you can almost feel the delicate pedals even through Van Gogh's heavy application of paint. Another example of his mastery.
