Virginia Woolf's novels have been translated into more than fifty languages. Virginia was born into a family filled with artists, writers, philosophers and the well to do of English society. A common theme throughout several of her novels and short stories resemble the time she spent as St. Ives, Cromwall where here family spent frequent Summers in her youth.

Virginia suffered the loss of her mother in 1895, her half-sister Stella 2 years later and her father in in 1904. She suffered deeply through these losses, having multiple "nervous breakdowns". In 1912 she married Leonard Woolf. Both Virginia and Leonard were pacifists and internationalists who believed in promoting peace among all people and nations. It was during this time that Virginia became associated with the influential Bloomsbury Group, known for their liberal views towards feminism, pacifism and sexuality.  It was an association she was very proud of. Virginia also carried on a relationship with the writer Vita Sackville-West for many years. The novel "Orlando" was called "the longest and most charming love letter in literature" by Sackville-West's oldest son. They shared a close bond well into the 1930's.

It was during the early years of WWII that Virginia's deep depression resurfaced. She was despondent. She heard voices and fell into a deep sadness. Ultimately her depression would cause her to commit suicide on March 28, 1941 by filling her pockets with stones and walking into the River Ouse. Her legacy has grown every decade since her death. She has become a feminist and lesbian icon and her writings have continued to inspire generations of women and men.
